Patient Engagement Framework

Patient Engagement Framework

Patient engagement is an important and constant feature of all clinical governance initiatives. The patient engagement framework presented here is the product of year 2014 clinical governance program. Participants through group discussion identified opportunities and challenges related to patient engagement. Through an affinity map process the generated items were collated under four areas of engagement; clinical care, health services, policy making and research. These areas of engagement were then divided into three forms of engagement; enlightening, consulting and empowering. Plotting engagement areas against engagement forms created a matrix of 12 options for patient engagement. The position of the options on the matrix should not be taken as a quantitative measurement for the degree of patient engagement but as an option that should be appropriate to the relevant situation. Furthermore, options for patient engagement are influenced by factors that have been grouped under three categories; human, organizational and regulatory. These factors will influence the possibility and appropriateness of the area and form of patient engagement in your setting .

This framework can also be applied to family and community engagement.
